Let's Go BLACK Too Brunch?

What do you normally do on a Sunday in Madison, Wisconsin?

Well, if you remember a few years back, when Artists Collective was hosting show after show, on Madison's East (EASY) Side. Willie Wright (owner of Artists Collective) warned his supporters that if you purchased a BLACK PASS (wristband), you will have access granted to ALL Artists Collective future events. Let's just say, he stood on his word.

Exercising my BLACK Pass access with Willie Wright vouching for me at the door. This felt great because I always advocate for Black events to have a guest list for the who’s who in the city of Madison. No shame, having me on your guest list guarantees content captured at elevated levels. Overall, utilizing a guest list can increase your attendance and encourage the people on your guest list to spread the word about your happenings. Adding a discounted plus-one rate might not be in everyone's budget but when attempting to build or offer something the city isn't equipped for or used to, it may require convincing your target market with high valued rewards. Once you know you have something great to offer, don't get caught up on collecting every coin you're accounted for. In time, you'll earn an income greater than you can imagine. It will almost feel like people are just giving you money. That's an attest to your hard work and dedication to see the vision and stay down.

Vibes inside.

  • In the best way, it felt BLACK! The potential of this monthly Sunday Brunch has gap bridging vibes all over it. According to Willie Wright "they are going to have to start calling me Mr. Sunday Brunch." As he slid back into the kitchen after personally serving his supporting guests. It's the humility for me. The lights were conversation-dim with a wooden accent throughout the lounge. The seating was intimate with deal closing elements for business occasions. The bar was positioned across the dance floor with a wall of glass windows leading to their outdoor patio area. The weather isn't quite permitting to entertain guests (BLACK guests) outside in Madison weather. The guest greeter Roche was shy yet professional and willing to take a photo for my blog. The dj was definitely dj'ing! Sounds were provided by Dj Wavy Will with a guest appearance from the legendary Will E. Banks. With respect, Rest in peace to Taye Sharkiee.

The stage had a VIP vibe with a select number of booth style seating for premium attendees. The women were on their baddest behavior in the best way possible. In my personal experience, events that have more women in attendance is more likely to be successful no matter who is hosting it. It also helps when the women show up with that shit on! After 3 to 4 hours of getting ready to enjoy their night, women in Madison normally show up to the parties bringing life and room controlling energy. Let me tell you, the fellas are here for it. It's not like we (men) are half-stepping. Madison is birthing a new breed of male go-getters who aren't waiting until they're retired and washed nor are they settling for street pharmacy activities. BLACK men and women in Madison are increasingly becoming business owners and credit builders. Get your rich friends and pull up to the next Sunday Brunch in April. Artists Collective got motion with this one for sure.

Everyone was friendly and all smiles. I saw a little bit of every type of who's who in the building. From local artists, to athletes, intelligent women, hot girl summers, hustlers, scammers, non-profits, radio hosts, event planners, blue-collar workers, stragglers, aunties, uncles, and ya momma's momma too. It was bus'n bus'n you hear me!

Crowd Surfing

As I made my way through the crowd, I noticed the opportunity to capture content for LessWork Literature blog series. We (BLACK Madison) don’t always have opportunities to present daytime vibes inside the same places we're known for turning up on nights and weekends. $/0 to the Robinia Courtyard for taking the initiative to challenge false narratives surrounding BLACK spaces. No fights, no arguing, no drama, just BLACK LOVE!

This environment spoke to groups of people who enjoy a mood setting playlist (Reggae and Neo Soul beats are cheat codes, thank me later) while eating, dancing a bit, and building a network with Madison's active and up and coming movers and shakers. We all have something to contribute to making Madison a landmark for educating the masses that even our Local Is The New Global. #LookLocal1st

If The Goal Is To Grow!

We are moving in the right direction. As someone with clientele, I can't help but offer elevated information to grow. No matter what my relationship to the seeds planted. From my experience with planning, hosting, and executing events at prominent levels and lower. The common denominators I often found myself addressing were the lack of awareness we were creating, low staff and attendance count, and no sponsorship deals done before the day of the event. This is a recipe for working more, instead of less. The goal is to do LESS WORK with more support. The music and entertainment creatives in Madison are underserved here. Still, very few of us like Artists Collective have uncovered a dire need that only the hip-hop sector can deliver solutions for. Local businesses and organizations can align themselves with our positioning by hiring LessWork Local Lifestyle to assist with partnering with the flexible growth of Madison's untapped music market. This will give businesses and organizations a direct line on local creatives offering music, media, and marketing solutions.

Working the Room

The brunch began around 2pm, the date is March 5, 2023. Location, Robinia Courtyard - Madison, WI. I showed up just after 5pm from visiting the Chazen Muesum for a follow up story from a Tuesday A.M. radio show that I co-host with Tara Wilhelmi on WORT FM 89.9. Upon my approval I noticed familiar faces leaving the event. I say my "what up though" line and keep it moving. After my BLACK Pass approval was granted, I was lowkey geeked like yeah, "Put Some Respect On My Face Card." Whole time, I'm not knowing when anyone else would need to head out, so, I quickly settled in and began working the room. My shooter's (photographer) rest days are Sundays so she (K.I.L.O. aka Skit'Lz) is at home resting but on standby if I make the call. Still looking around the venue and it is looking like "US" in this thang. No excusing, I whipped out that Samsung S20 Plus and got busy. Now I'm walking around with the shared notebook app open on my phone, capturing photos of the supporters/staff, and collecting their names to give them their just do. I definitely did not come to play with these people. On FOLKS nem grave! Who was at the brunch with his "Laptop In The Party?"
